It was still raining when we got up but we decided that we would still go out on the long drive we had planned to Lower Sabie.
The first thing we saw was a shongololo (huge millipede) crawling along the road. But then on the first leg of the drive we didn't see much as it was still raining and the animals were taking shelter. As we crossed the bridge there were several hippos playing in the water. Along the road towards lower Sabie we suddenly came across a whole herd of elephants crossing the road with a very tiny baby. As we approached Lower Sabie we stopped at Sunset Dam, a large waterhole. Here we saw some new birds including a yellow billed stork and a spoonbill, fishing in the water. We had our lunch by the river at Sabie with lots of Cape glossy starlings, bulbuls and weaver birds trying to pinch our chips! On the bank opposite were just 2 water buffalo. After lunch we were going to go home on the lower road but we met a man who said the road was very bad following the heavy rain so we returned the same way as we came and were very glad we did. As we crossed the bridge to pick up the main road there were 3 pied kingfishers sitting on the bridge and a wire tailed swallow on a branch.
Driving back within the space of three quarters of an hour we saw 2 families of Warthogs, each with 4 very small babies, a whole host of baboons and babies sitting, on the road, 3 very large rhino who crossed the road right in front of us, a hippo out of the water right by the roadside and then a leguan crossing the field! What a day! We slept well that night!
